Important Characters from The Hunger Games
Katniss Everdeen is a teenage girl who lives in District 12. District 12 is the coal mining district which is the poorest of all the districts. After her father died in a coal mining explosion, she became the main provider for her family because her mother slipped into depression. She loves to hunt and gather food for her family. If she's not hunting, then she sells her game in the black market to make money. Katniss volunteered for tribute to save her youngster sister's, Primrose, life after she was picked for the Hunger Games which is a fight to the death.
Primrose Everdeen, Prim as her nickname, is Katniss's 12 year old younger sister. She is thoughtful and sweet but also quiet. She has blonde hair and blue eyes which is not the typical look people have in District 12. Most of the people have dark hair, olive skin, and grey eyes such as Katniss.
Gale Hawthorne is Katniss's best friend and hunting partner who also lives in District 12. Katniss describes Gale in the book as handsome, very strong, and always catching other girls attention. He has dark hair, olive skin, and grey eyes which is very similar to Katniss.
Peeta Mellark is also from District 12. Peeta is randomly drawn, just like everyone else, to participate in the Hunger Games and he becomes Katniss's partner and life support. Little does Katniss know, Peeta has always had a secret crush on her. Throughout the novel you soon realize the love Peeta has for Katniss and his willingness to do anything to keep her safe and alive.
Haymitch Abernathy is the one and only winner of the Hunger Games from District 12. Because he has been a winner of the Hunger Games, it is his job to "mentor" Katniss and Peeta. Though he is drunk most of the time, you soon realize the skills and tactics he has to help them win. He was the one who came up with the idea of love and romance between Katniss and Peeta which ultimately saved their lives.
Cinna, who is from the Capitol, is Katniss's stylist for all the events leading up to the Hunger Games. They immediately form a bond and a connection. To help Katniss survive the Hunger Games, Cinna wants many sponsors to notice and like her so they will send her gifts during the games which could, in the end, save her life.
Effie Trinket is also from the Capitol. The Capitol sent her to District 12 to draw two tributes names and see who will be in the current years Hunger Games. She is the escort for District 12 which means she is too make them feel happy about participating in the games. She is known for her up beat personality and the famous quote "May the odds be ever in your favor!"
Rue is a 12 year old tribute from District 11. Rue reminds Katniss of Prim back at home and because of this, Katniss takes her under her wing. They develop a plan to destroy the food supply for the other tributes, but there plan does not go as planned. Rue gets stuck in a net and speared by a remaining tribute from District 1. As Rue is dying, she asks Katniss to sing her a lullaby. Once Rue dies, Katniss covers her dead body in flowers.

The Novel vs The Movie
The movie is very similar to the novel minus a few details. One element I noticed that was a big difference between the two was the process of death. In the novel, the death of the tributes was very slow. They seemed to have more perseverance to stay alive and win in the novel rather than dying immediately like in the movie. For example, Katniss creates a camp near a girl who has made a campfire. When the girl is noticed by the "group" of tributes who are working together, they attack her in attempt to kill her. After the attack when they realize she is still barely hanging on, they send Peeta to finish her off. Another example is when there are only three tributes left, (Katniss, Peeta, and Cato) and Cato is attacked by a pack of monster like dogs and survives for several hours before Katniss puts him out of his misery. Unlike the novel, in the movie, Cato is attacked by monster like dogs but then Katniss instantly kills him while he is being attacked.
Another element that is different between the novel and the movie is the mutated mutts. Like I said earlier, in the finale of the movie Cato is attacked by monster like dogs and is killed by Katniss (in the novel he is killed slowly and in the movie he is killed quickly). In the movie, a pack of monster like, or mutated dogs come running out of the woods trying to attack the remaining tributes. The audience watching the movie can clearly see that the monsters coming out of the woods are just large dogs. In the novel, it is a little different. In the novel, the dogs coming out of the woods are mutated versions of the deceased tributes.
In addition, the movie also added some scenes that weren't necessarily in the book. For example, we get to see more 'behind the scenes" of President Snow and the head Game-maker Seneca Crane. We see a couple scenes were President Snow is in his rose garden giving advice to Seneca. It is also nice to see Seneca's character rounded out a little bit. We mostly see him adding horrible things to the game arena for the children to overcome which doesn't make him a very likable person or character. But, when he is interacting with President Snow, we get to see more depth to him as a person and it seems as if he is at the mercy of the Capital just like anyone else.

Important Quotation Explained
“I want the audience to recognize you when you’re in the arena," says Cinna dreamily. “Katniss, the girl who was on fire.”
This quote is an excellent example and very clearly points out a major theme in the novel which is the importance of appearances. Cinna understands how important it is to impress the audience because he knows that appearances in the Hunger Games can have a huge effect of life or death. By having Katniss stand out during the introduction of the tributes, certain admirers will notice her that otherwise would have not noticed her before. These admirers or sponsors can provide gifts and supplies for Katniss during the game which could ultimately keep her alive. Even though Katniss does not see herself as spectacular or beautiful, she becomes one of the most noticed and well thought of tribute who was known as "the girl who was on fire."

Katniss and Jane Compared
Katniss and Jane, both, share many of the same struggles. For example, they both begin as poor. In the beginning, Jane lives with her Aunt Reed. Jane's aunt is horrible towards her and does not except Jane for who she is. Because of this, Jane leaves to go start a new life. In doing so and not having anywhere to live, she becomes poor. Eventually, she finds a job at Thornfield and works as a governess for Mr. Rochester's daughter, Adele. Later Jane becomes a part of the Rochester family and becomes wealthy by inheriting family money.
Katniss also begins as poor and works her way up to being wealthy. In the beginning she lives in District 12 which is the poorest of all twelve districts. Later, due to certain circumstances, she volunteers to participate in the Hunger Games which is a fight to the death. Surprisingly she wins! Because she is only the second tribute to win from District 12, she becomes very noticed. Her reward for winning the Hunger Games is food for her whole entire district for a year. Therefore, because of her win, she became rich.
Lastly, Jane and Katniss both have similar outward appearances. They might not look alike, but they are both "plain". Jane is ridiculed for her appearance and all throughout the book. From people at Lowood to even her own cousins calling her ugly. But later, Jane finds a someone who loves and cares for her for just they way she is, Mr. Rochester. Katniss, also doesn't see herself as the beauty type. As Cinna from The Capitol is trying to convince her of her beauty, she wants nothing to do with it. Finally though, Katniss realizes that Peeta has loved her since the first day they saw each other. Peeta excepts Katniss and loves Katniss for who she is wholeheartedly.
In conclusion, both Jane and Katniss are very outspoken and independent women. Even though sometimes throughout the novel they may seem shy or quiet, that doesn't cancel out their intense personality to be straightforward and self-governing. They both go through much character development from being poor, little, quiet girls to beautiful, outspoken, rich women!
